Description: Palermo on the island of Sicily is a city of roughly 1.2 million people. It was founded by the Phoenicians over 2700 years ago, and is Sicily’s cultural, economic, and political capital. It hosts opera houses, theaters, and a great number of cathedrals. In the outlying areas are the popular Mondello Beach to the northwest and the hillside town of Monreale.
